The popularity of the peninsula attracted the attention of Benjamin F. By 1880, a local newspaper had observed that the popularity of the beach was increasing, with picnicking on the grounds becoming a popular pastime. In 1878, James West opened a group of bathhouses near the beach. He charged 25 cents per person to ride from Sandusky to Cedar Point on his boat, Young Reindeer, widely recognized as the beginning of commercial tourism on the Cedar Point peninsula. Zistel opened a bathhouse on the north shore of the peninsula and the same year built a beer garden with a small dance floor. In 1870, he began to ferry locals to the Cedar Point peninsula, which opened as a public bathing beach. Louis Zistel, a German immigrant, built two boats to transport the prisoners. It was used to defend a prison for Confederate soldiers on nearby Johnson's Island. In the 1860s during the American Civil War, housing for a battery of four field artillery pieces was constructed at the tip of the peninsula. Railroad and steamship travel supported an emerging tourism industry, and rapid development of the area began. Sandusky, which featured an important shipping harbor and two railroads, transformed into a major economic center over the next three decades. Local fishermen leased land and built living quarters there. The Cedar Point peninsula, named for its abundance of cedar trees, was originally known for its fishing. The Lake's islands, such as Kelleys Island and South Bass Island, were gaining a reputation for their freshwater bathing resorts. In the late-19th century, the south shore region of Lake Erie became a popular vacation destination for the emerging middle-class in the United States. In addition, several of its buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Among seasonal amusement parks in North America, Cedar Point consistently ranks as the second-most visited, with an estimated 3.44 million visitors in 2022 behind only Canada's Wonderland. Cedar Point also received the Golden Ticket Award for "Best Amusement Park in the World" from Amusement Today for sixteen consecutive years from 1997 to 2013. The park has reached numerous milestones over the years, including one in which Cedar Point became the only amusement park in the world with five roller coasters that exceed 200 feet (61 m) in height – Magnum XL-200, Millennium Force, Valravn, Steel Vengeance, and Top Thrill 2 – as well as the only park with roller coasters in all four height classifications. Other amenities and attractions featured within the park include a one-mile-long (1.6 km) beach, an outdoor water park named Cedar Point Shores, an indoor water park named Castaway Bay, two marinas, and an outdoor sports complex called Cedar Point Sports Center. Known as "America's Roller Coast", the park features 16 roller coasters, which ranks third among amusement parks in North America behind Six Flags Magic Mountain (20) and Canada's Wonderland (18).Ĭedar Point's normal operating season runs from early May until Labor Day in September, which is followed by weekend-only operation through Halloween during an annual event known as HalloWeekends. Cedar Point, which is owned and operated by Cedar Fair, is the flagship of the company's amusement park chain. It opened in 1870 and is considered the second-oldest operating amusement park in the US behind Lake Compounce. With a 200-foot, 90-degree drop, a top speed of 74 mph, and loads of airtime, Steel Vengeance is plenty scary in its own right. This article is about the amusement park in Ohio. Formerly known as Mean Streak, the wooden coaster got a hybrid wooden-steel makeover in 2018. Other Cedar Point rides include the wonderful launch coaster, Maverick, the groundbreaking Magnum XL-200, and the superb Steel Vengeance. Surprisingly, despite its extreme height and speed, the wild coaster disappoints in its ability to generate any appreciable airtime. In other words, Millennium Force is plenty scary. And capitalizing on its 310 feet of pent-up energy, it reaches a blistering 93 mph, making it one of the world’s fastest coasters. Number 11: Millennium Force at Cedar Point in Sandusky, OhioĪt 310 feet, Millennium Force is so tall, Cedar Point and the ride’s designers came up with a new category designation: the “ Giga-Coaster.” To get to the top of its extra-long lift hill, it was among the first coasters to use a zippy elevator cable instead of the more traditional (and pokier) chain lift.
